U18 Championships Kevin Coombs Cup Day 3

The day started with SA Country Men taking on Queensland South, a win would have provided an opportunity to avoid higher placed teams in the quarters later in the week and some confidence for the second game against Victoria Metro in the evening.  The contest was fairly even for the first two quarters before Queensland South started to exert their superiority in the transition and from the 3 point line.  Queensland South responded to SA Country's attempts at a recovery and ran out winners 100 to 67.  Black led SA Country with 23 points with Bald and Hunter providing support with 10 points each.  J Walsh collected 9 of SA Country's 33 rebounds but needed more help agaisnt Queensland Souths effort of 60 rebounds for the game.

The day didn't get any better when SA Country Men in their second game of the day played Victoria Metro whose defensive pressure caused SA Country to turn the ball over and forced them into taking difficult shots.  Victoria were simply to good for SA Country providing us with a biggest defeat in the tournament (115-44).  Our highest scorer was Cannizzaro with 8 points, followed by J Walsh and Scott with 6 points.  Makoi worked hard for his 8 rebounds and J Walsh with 5.  Coach Petty will need to regroup quickly for the next game against WA Metro at 11.15am who are 2-2 just above SA Country on the ladder.

SA Country Women were in a similar situation playing NSW Metro building an 18 point lead by quarter time.  It looked like NSW Metro would run away with game before SA Country regrouped after half time break to cut the lead to 14 midway through the third quarter.  NSW Metro responded going in the final quarter with a 20 point lead and eventually winning the game 76-51.  Close had a good shooting game with 16, Levyy 10 and Size 8 points.  Winter and Stratford finished with 8 and 7 rebounds respectively.  SA Country certainly shot better from the free throw line with 63%.  The women have a double header playing WA Metro at 9am and ACT at 5.30pm and a chane to get their first win.
