Hawks Sign A New Secret Weapon

Ringwood Hawks Head Coach Ken Harrington leaned back in his chair, looked out of his office window which has views across Ringwood and smiled. After a tough 2019 NBL1 season for his team, a smile on his face has been a rather rare event, but things could be changing as the focus is now on 2020.

“There are very few benefits with getting old, it’s just creaky bones and wrinkles.” Harrington lamented as he eased himself to his feet.

“But I have actually found one and it’s a big one if you Coach NBL1 basketball. I present to you our newest player and secret weapon CJ Asuncion-Byrd.”

If you are as confused as we are, I think we can safely assume that the Hawks have found a new player and Harrington is feeling all the bumps and bruises that come as a person that has played Basketball his whole life. But more importantly who is CJ Asuncion-Byrd?

Asuncion-Byrd as it turns out is the Hawks latest addition to their roster for the 2020 NBL1 season. He is a 6’2 highly athletic shooting guard from Lemoyne College in New York who Harrington believes will be a secret weapon in more ways than one.

“Because I am old and have been around so long, I have managed to make quite a few contacts in different areas of the USA.” Harrington said.

“I got a tip from a Coach in New York that there was a guy playing at Lemoyne who was about to graduate from College, was very talented and also Australian. See being old can have its benefits, well at least one anyway”

Lemoyne is the School that former Hawk Nate Champion attended and is now Head Coach, so the Hawks Coaching staff contacted Asuncion-Byrd and confirmed the rumor. Despite living in Greenwich, Connecticut for most of his life he was in fact born in Queensland and lived there till he was 6 years old. Not only has Harrington found a talented and exciting player, Asuncion-Byrd will not be considered an import player allowing the Hawks the opportunity to add another key player in a League that is clearly the second best in Australia.

“CJ is a huge signing for us. He can shoot and he is strong and athletic, our fans are going to love watching this guy fly.”

“He is also a great guy, Very respectful and will be incredibly popular with kids and teammates. I cannot wait till he arrives and gets involved in our Club”

As for Asuncion-Byrd, he is also excited to return to his Country of birth and has a few things he says he will bring to the Hawks.

“I have a passion to play and I will bring a defensive effort every game.”

“But I am excited just to be joining a great Club and be part of something special on and off the court.”

The Hawks can look forward to not just above the rim dunks and blocks but also a 40% three point shooter and excellent passer who is happy for fill any role his team needs on a given night. Asuncion-Byrd is also well regarded as a quality defensive player which is an area the Hawks are hoping to improve on in 2020.
