Lady Rockets v Southern

We missed Kirsty in our starting five but Tayla, Jo, Lauren, Norrisha and Opal were all determined to play hard against Southern. Tayla opened our scoring and Lauren ran the floor. Norrisha took a nice rebound and made her shot. Some great passing assisted Tayla to score again and Lauren made a smooth three. Jo took a strong steal and Opal made both foul shots. Courtney and Sophie left the bench and the team played tough defence. Opal continued to score well with a nice three and Courtney took a great rebound. So far, so good, the score was 22 all at quarter time.

A rare bad pass from Jo, led Southern to open the scoring, however a foul led to Jo scoring both shots. Norrisha scrambled for the ball, causing a jump ball and Sophie made a lovely three. However shots were just not sinking in but spinning out of the ring causing great frustration. Taylor came on and took a nice rebound and Jo pushed through to make a layup. Taylor showed strong hands but Southern made the most of their shots and were leading 38 to 32 at the long break.

The starting five were back on and a great grab from Jo was just one of many turnovers for both teams, at the start of this quarter. We hesitated and had a shot clock violation and as Opal made a terrific steal and Norrisha took another rebound, we were hopeful. Southern thought otherwise and went on a scoring spree and it wasn’t until 5m 18s left of the quarter that Tayla was fouled and made one out of two to open our scoring. She was fouled again and made the bonus, with only 6 points being scored for the whole quarter. Score was 54 to 38.

Opal opened the last quarter quickly and inspired us all with a terrific three! Abi came on and the team lifted as Jo made a nice intercept then a steal and scored. Norrisha made a nice layup and then swished in a three. Lauren had played fierce, relentless defence all night and caused a jump ball. The team never gave up but had a frustrating night, going down to Southern 72 to 59.

Top scorers were – Jo and Tayla C with 16 pts each
Top assists were – Jo and Lauren with 3 each
Top rebounders were – Tayla C and Norrisha with 8 each

We are now 3rd on the ladder, with one game to go against West at home next Saturday at 6:30pm. See you there to cheer the team on!
