Congratulations to Venom Division 1 Men’s player BRENTON CHARLES (sponsored by Atherton Transport) on reaching 250 Big V games. Brenton began playing Big V in 2007 with Ringwood before joining the Venom in 2013. Brenton had his season high in Round 2 against Southern Peninsula with 17 points & 3 assists, and just last week played all 40 minutes and scored 15 points against Latrobe City. In season 2015 Brenton has averaged 7.4pts, 2.2reb, 3.1ass & 1.2stl per game averaging 27.5 minutes per game from his 15 games. He plays a key role in running the point for the Venom team, as well as a key defensive role on some of the opposition’s best guards.

Congratulations to Venom Youth League Women’s player HANNAH BENSCH (sponsored by B&P Caelli Joint Sealing & Waterproofing P/L) on reaching 100 Big V games

Hannah began playing Big V in 2011, and was a member of the 2013 Youth Women’s championship team. So far in season 2015 Hannah has averaged 4.8pts, 7.5reb, 2.5ass & 1.2stl per game averaging close to 25 minutes per game. Hannah has also suited up with the State Championship women’s team for 4 games this season. CONGRATULATIONS!!

This coming Saturday night Warrandyte Basketball says goodbye and thank you to one of it’s longest serving players. Chelsea Beal (nee Ransom) will be suiting up for her last home game of Big V for the Warrandyte Venom having been a member of the Venom Women’s side since their induction into Big V in 2007. Chelsea will finish her Big V career with 179 games spanning both Division 1 Women (2007 – 2013) and State Championship Women (2014 – 2015) with the obvious highlights being a Championship in 2013 and a chance to play at the highest level in the last 2 seasons with a promotion to SCW.

Chelsea has been a Warrandyte basketballer for over 20 years, having played domestically for the Warrandyte Redbacks since Under 8s. She was a member of the inaugural Big V side in 2007 along with the likes of Jo Metcalfe and Kate Cohen and played alongside some further greats such as Sally Phillips. She has seen the growth and development of the junior Venom program first hand with young players coming through the ranks becoming her Big V teammates. Close friend and Venom Captain, Meg Dargan, has provided an insight on playing alongside Chelsea; “For me, basketball at Warrandyte has always been played alongside one of my best pals ‘Chels’. She’s an absolute pleasure to have as a team mate and I can’t thank her enough for the years of friendship and support”, says Dargan.

For the majority of the 179 games, Justin Nelson was Chelsea’s coach; “It goes without saying that in retirement Chelsea leaves a huge legacy at Warrandyte Basketball. Chelsea has displayed an incredible level of loyalty, work ethic and dedication to the club, her teammates and coaches. I was fortunate to spend seven years coaching Chelsea and to this day I still rate her amongst the very best shut-down defenders across the league over the last decade. To all of her teammates across the journey, and her coaches, we all better off for having had a chance to walk out on the court alongside a champion”, says Nelson.

Current Venom coach Nicole Howard is so pleased that Chelsea is going out at the top of her game. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my two seasons of coaching ‘Chela’ having of course worked with her as an assistant to the women’s side before that. She has a tremendous defensive capability, which was appreciated at Division 1 but perhaps not fully comprehended until she has had the chance to match herself up against some of the very best. In her two years at SCW I have given her a defensive job every game and she never failed to disappoint having limited the impact of players such as Tegan Cunningham and Kendall Rodriquez, after having done the job in seasons prior on the likes of Stacey Barr and Vanessa Power”.

“She shows her opposition respect and has been an absolute example of team player both on and off the court. She has taught our younger players so much about the art of defending and I can safely say any of our wins at SCW level would not have eventuated without Chelsea on task. She will be sorely missed and every accolade that comes her way as she steps out of the game is well and truly deserved”, says Howard.

Chelsea will play two more games for the Venom. Saturday July 4 @ 8:30pm vs Eltham will be her last home game. In a first for Warrandyte Basketball Chelsea’s No #5 singlet is to be retired in recognition of her commitment and contribution to the club. We encourage everybody to get down to WSC on Saturday night and congratulate her on a wonderful career.
