Palau National Olympic Committee’s secretary general, Baklai Temengil is the new Oceania National Olympic Committees vice-president.
The 50-year-old former Palau paddler becomes the first woman in the Oceania region and the first in the Olympic solidarity to hold such position.
Temengil was voted in following the ONOC General Assembly which ended at the Sofitel Resort and Spa in Nadi yesterday.
“I feel good of the support from the Oceania Olympic Committees and we must continue with our commitment,” she said.
“Be at the forefront of things and to engage with every committee of each NOCs, working together as a group and as an individual I’m excited and I look forward to the challenge.”
Following two rounds of voting Temengil was declared a winner against two other nominees Michael Stanley of New Zealand and Antoinne Boudier of Vanuatu.
“I was excited I knew whatever happens I had a feeling that my work will be recognised with members because they have been contributing a lot of work to women.
“I had a lot of confidence and I also want to thank my family for their support.”
