CAROLINE Springs caused a major upset at Dempster Park on Saturday, after beating the previously undefeated ladder-leaders, the Yarraville Seddon Eagles by 37-points.
The win gifted the Lakers a spot in the Division 2 Reserves Grand Final and the week-off.
After winning all of its games throughout the home and away season and defeating Caroline Springs the previous weekend, Yarraville Seddon were hot-favourites heading into the weekend’s semi-final.
However it wasn’t to be, with the Lakers stepping up its attack for Week 1 of the Finals.
Caroline Springs were unstoppable during the first quarter, scoring 30 points to 0, however Yarraville Seddon didn’t take thing lying down, cutting the margin to gettable 17-points at the main break.
However, the Lakes pressure around the ball and strong defence was too much for the Eagles to handle.
The Lakers kept the Eagles to just one behind in the third term, while they piled on another four goals to extend its lead.
It was more of the same in the final quarter, with Caroline Springs doing enough to win the match and setting up a Grand Final berth on September 4.
Riley Aranyos played one of his best games for Caroline Springs, along with teammates Justin Brook and Glenn Downs.
Downs and second leading goal kicker Michael Saker each finished with two goals apiece next to their names, whilst teammate Aaron King was the leading goal scorer on the ground, with three goals.
Yarraville Seddon still have the opportunity to reach the Grand Final, they will take on North Footscray in the preliminary final at Dempster Park on Saturday.
North Footscray knocked Glen Orden out of the finals race on Sunday, defeating the Hawks 24.12 (156) to 7.8. (50).
After a tight first quarter the Devils soon kicked into gear, opening up an unassailable 38-point lead at half-time.
North Footscray soon became unstoppable as the game progressed, scoring goal after and the margin growing further.
Harley Patterson was the main target up forward for the Devils, he booted six, while Matthew Walsh also kicked four goals.
Brody Vorano and Shaun Gill were also two of the Devil’s best players for the match.
This weekend Yarraville Seddon will take on North Footscray on Saturday at Dempster Park.
The last time these two sides met, the Eagles won by just five points.
The winner of the preliminary final will meet Caroline Springs in the Grand Final.
