State Performance Program 2014/2015

STATE PERFORMANCE PROGRAM

                           2014/2015

Basketball Victoria (BV) has restructured its High Performance capacity, with Mike McHugh joining the HP team. He will provide support to Coach Development and provide greater support to the State Performance Program (SPP).

BV introduced the SPP to create a talent identification and development model that meets the needs of our athlete and coach pathways, assists the state body in achieving its broad objectives and best prepares our Victorian State teams for national competitions. The State Performance Program (SPP), implemented in 2013 experienced some teething problems and has now been reorganized, updated and refocused to transform the program and meet required obligations and requirements.

The new SPP has been designed to align with, and underpin, the philosophies of the revamped National Performance Program (NPP) and the restructured Victorian National Intensive Training Program (NITP). This will allow for systematic and progressive identification, selection and development of Victorian athletes from 14 to 19 years that is sympathetic and supportive of and collaborative with the elite programs of Basketball Victoria affiliate association members.

The objectives of Basketball Victoria’s SPP are:

  • To identify athletes from the VJBL, Associations, Academies, State team trials and the NITP/Southern Cross Challenge/East Coast Challenge selection camps, who display the characteristics and ability required of an elite athlete, and train them in a group environment to become future State team representatives and the best players that they can be.
  • To increase contact with accredited SPP venues from BV’s High Performance Coaching staff.
  • To increase the pool of Victorian athletes who have the capacity and ability to meet State team standards and future national/international opportunities.
  • To further educate the athletes and local coaches about the latest sports science and sports medicine concepts to flow through to the accredited association’s network.

SPP Operations Manual

To support the new program an Operations Manual has been prepared for Accredited Associations to assist delivery of the program. As well as including all operations requirements this Manual includes the Athlete Technical Program and Drills and Activity Book to aid the development of coaches and the quality delivery of the program to the athletes.

BV will also prepare an SPP Calendar covering all Accredited Association Training programs and Camps for distribution around all Victorian Associations.

Further information will be provided shortly however any queries can be directed to Mike McHugh at mike.mchugh@basketballvictoria.com.au
