All sports are required to submit to the PNG Olympic Committee a list of potential team members. Whilst the final team will be selected early next year we were required to start planning for the Games three months ago and this includes building a database of potential team members. In addition to established members of the team we look at up and coming athletes to arrive at a “long list”. We have to look at each event on the programme and ask ourselves who might we be able to select for that event.
All athletes in this list are strongly recommended to provide biodata and apply for a passport. They will then be entered into the Games database. When the time comes next year to submit the final entries we will not be allowed to enter anyone whose name is not on that list. Whilst it may seem unnecessary for athletes to apply for passports, provide photos and other details when they haven’t yet been selected this exercise does encourage sports to plan ahead and it saves last-minute administrative hassles like dealing with passport applications. By going through this process Athletics PNG is also able to consider individual athletes and consider whether we are able to help them to reach a level where they can compete for a place in the team.
Being included in this long list does not mean that an athlete has been selected and will be invited to training camps or selected for overseas training or competition. What we are saying is that if these athletes work hard and continue to improve then they may make the team. Our financial means are limited and in selecting athletes for training at NSI or elsewhere we have to prioritise. If an athlete is in full-time school or working, then obviously we will not interfere with that but if we see a very promising athlete is not working or in school then we would consider him/her for special attention. Whether an athlete has access to adequate training facilities and coaching support at home is another factor is taken into consideration.
