IAAF Melbourne Classic

Nelson Stone will line up with 2008 Olympic Champion and reigning world champion LaShaun Merritt from the USA in Melbourne on Saturday in the IAAF Melbourne World Challenge. Stone’s invitation to compete in the most prestigious Meet on the Australian calendar is a result of his top performances at the recent Queensland State Championships

The Pacific Games 400m champion placed second in all three sprint events and produced season’s best performances of 47.33 in the 400m and 21.42 secs in the 200m. Coach Lloyd Way was very pleased with Nelsons performances said Athletics PNG president Tony Green, especially the 400m which was run in difficult wet conditions. Donna Koniel was also in great form, producing a personal best 2min 13.52 seconds in the 800m to go second on the PNG all time best list. Only National record holder Salome Dell has run faster than this. Koniel’s run was however no surprise as she has been training very well in Rabaul and clocking consistently good times in her trials over recent weeks.

Toea Wisil will also be in action in Melbourne and will again be up against Australian record holder Melissa Breen and Olympic 100m hurdles champion Sally Pearson in the 100m. Wisil ran a great 100m in Sydney last weekend clocking 11.46 seconds
