Gold and Silver in the womens 1500m was the highlight of the third day of athletics at the Mini Pacific Games in Wallis today with Poro Gahekave breasting the tape just 7/100th of a second ahead of Jenny Albert in 4min 55.91 seconds. It was another impressive performance for PNG’s middle distance girls after a clean sweep in the 800m the previous day. Other medallists for PNG on day three were Andipas Georasi with a bronze in the 1500m and Monica Miugle third in a field of four competitors in the womens 5000m. Georasi will be left wondering what might have been if he had opted out of the 5000m in the morning and saved all his energy for the 1500m.
Eunice Steven leads the seven event heptathlon by 399 points after four events and must go into the final day confident of picking up her first pacific Games Gold medal in a long career. With her two best events still to come (Javelin and Long Jump) Steven is in a very strong position.
Friday is the last day of athletics and will be a big day for the PNG team with Sapolai Yao setting off in the half marathon at 6am ; Mowen Boino the 110 and 400m hurdles; Betty Burua and Donna Koniel in the 400m hurdles; Toea Wisil in the 200m ; David Jessem in the high jump ; Betty Burua and Annie Topal in the triple jump; Poro Gahekave and Jenny Albert in the steeplechase ; and the day finishing with all the relays.
