New Sponsor, New Stadium, Fresh Start...
The Zambrero Willetton Tigers are looking forward to a fresh new start in their newly renovated stadium that took place over the last few months. As the Zambrero Willetton Tigers prepare for the upcoming season, coach Steve Black believes that, “we found the right balance between recruiting some size to cover the long term absences of Zambrero Willetton Tiger juniors Cody, Johnson and Jackson.” The focus during this preseason, have been the teams’ conditioning and the teams’ execution. The Zambrero Willetton Tigers will be able to put these factors to test during the preseason blitz, March 6 & 7th, and in their practice game against the Rockingham Flames, March 14th, before kicking off Round 1. When asked about the focus of the preseason games, Black states, “We hope to use the blitz and practice game to get used to playing together and give all our players an opportunity to get exposure at the SBL level.” Coach Black is excited for this new season in a new stadium. “Willetton Basketball’s success over the last 20 years at a domestic and representative level has meant the 4 additional courts are a necessity for continued growth of the game. I am very excited to be able to train in our own venue and build links between the junior senior programs. Everyone is very excited to see what the SBL game night will look like and for us as a team to represent our club to the best of our abilities.”
The Zambrero Willetton Tigers have acquired two new additions in the off season, Patrick Burke and Lewis Thomas. After having an All-Star season last year with the Goldfield Giants, Burke, at 201cm and 109kg, signed his next contract in Europe with Copenhagen Basketball. Burke states, “I feel I can bring a solid presence in the paint, with rebounding, points and defense.” Burke’s decision to come play for the Zambrero Willetton Tigers was based on the teams’ dynamic and style of play. “Last year, I feel that you guys had really high energy both on offense and defense, And I am a high energy player, so it seemed like a good fit for a player like myself, to be a part of that type of playing style.” Fun facts about Burke: He likes to go hunting and fishing back home, played ice hockey in college, majored in environmental science and is currently pursuing his MBA. NBL1 stud Lewis Thomas, at 203cm and 100kg, returns back home to Perth after several successful stints over east and in the UK. Thomas commends the Tigers for their success as he states, “The Zambrero Willetton Tigers have always been a successful organization; and everyone I have spoken to said it was a great program and a great group of guys. The passion and culture of the organization made it an easy choice, to go along with the excitement of the new stadium,” giving the Tigers a great chance at recruiting Thomas. Fun facts about Thomas: He has played in 2 international 3x3 pro tour tournaments, his favorite meal to eat are burgers, and he can’t live without his coffee.
The Zambrero Willetton Tigers will face off against the Senators at Willetton Basketball Stadium for Round 1, at 7pm.
