SUPER coach Graham Normanton turned 60 last week - but he is anxious to remind everyone that there is still plenty of life left in the "old dog."
"I reckon I've won about 24 trophies with various clubs as a coach - and the hunger is still there to add a few more," said Normanton, whose astonishing achievements led to him being inducted into the Football Hall of Fame WA's Hall of Recognition in 2008.
His most recent success came earlier this year when guiding Forrestfield United to success in the State League Division One Night Series competition in his first season with the club. It was a fitting triumph as Forrestfield are celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2019.
Most of his trophy success came in a lengthy spell with Perth Soccer Club, winning five league titles, six Top Four Cups and triumphing in the Night Series eight times.
His haul of trophies is considered to be the most by any coach in a semi-professional league in Australia.
He briefly left the semi-pro coaching scene in 2011 to take up an appointment with Perth Glory as recruitment manager with the A-League club, which was then led by Ian Ferguson.
Normanton returned to the local club scene a year later to join Inglewood United and then a few years later was back with his old club Kingsway Olympic, with whom he had started his coaching career as a player-coach about 25 years ago.
His latest venture with Forrestfield has seen him re-united with Hall of Fame inductee Glen Guidici, who was his former goalkeeping coach at Perth SC and now fills a similar role with United.
Normanton and Guidici were among the guests who attended the function to launch the new-look Football Hall of Fame WA at Dorrien Gardens on November 15 - and they caught up with Hall of Fame inductee Aldo Trinca, who was one of Normanton's assistants in his golden spell at Perth SC, and Hall of Fame Legend Gary Marocchi, who is now president of Perth SC.
Graham isn't the only Normanton enjoying success in football. His daughter Jennifer was a member of the Subiaco team that won the women's first division title this year.
"She has shown me up," said Graham. "In all my years playing in England (with Hartlepool) and in WA (with Azzurri, North Perth Croatia, Olympic and Bayswater) I never succeeded in winning a league title as a player. So, it's a first for the family - and we are very proud."
