Round One wrap: Floreat down Perth, Gwelup hit five

Football West News

The big game in Round One of the 2020 National Premier Leagues WA went the way of Floreat Athena, who won 2-0 at reigning champions Perth SC.

Both of Floreat’s goals came from new signings. Striker Noah Shamaki gave his side the lead early in the second half following some wonderful footwork, before Sean McManus scored in stoppage time to ensure the three points.

Perth wasted a number of chances, none better than Thomas Southgate’s penalty 20 minutes from time which was saved by Jason Saldaris.

Former Athena striker Robert Petkov wasted no time in settling in his new surroundings as he scored twice to help Inglewood United defeat Rockingham City 3-2.

Another debutant to claim a brace was Riley Van Dieken, whose double included a last-minute stunner in Cockburn City’s 3-1 win at Sorrento.

There were plenty of goals about on the opening weekend, including Gwelup Croatia sticking five past Perth Glory.

Pre-season recruits Jon Stynes scored a hat-trick and Hasani Sinclair two, as Gwelup made a dream start to life in the NPL.

The Armadale-Bayswater City match had one more goal, as Bayswater won 4-2 at Alfred Skeet Reserve.

Both sides finished the game with 10 men and both coaches were carded, including Armadale’s John O’Rielly being dismissed.

But not for the first time it was Bayswater striker Daryl Nicol who had the final say with a late double which gave his team the win.

The other game in Round One went the way of Balcatta. Substitute Adam Zimarino netted the only goal against ECU Joondalup as Bobby Taneski enjoyed a winning start as head coach.
