Canberra Olympic’s Aisosa Ihegie Set for a Century

When Aisosa Ihegie was 18, he was asked to play his first NPL1 game.

“I got a call up from the then Belconnen United coach Dean Ugrinic,” Ihegie said.

“He called me to fill in and I just had to put in a good performance. It kind of worked I’d say, I’m still here.”

Still here indeed. After playing with Belconnen United FC, Tuggeranong United FC and now Canberra Olympic FC, the 25 year old is getting ready to run onto the field this weekend for his 100th NPL match.

“100 games, it’s crazy. I honestly had no idea but it’s humbling because 100 games and not that many injuries, I feel pretty blessed.

“I remember my first game like it was yesterday, with Belconnen. I was feeling nervous going out there with all the big boys but I played well, I think!

“I’ve become a lot more confident because as you get older you gain a lot more skill. There’s been new coaches, new team mates, it’s been amazing."

The Canberra Olympic striker has lived up to his name so far this season, scoring two goals in as many games.

The 25 year old confident in his club’s form this 2021 season.

“In pre-season, we had our ups and downs but I was pretty confident in the team, they’re really good players.

“I think it’s a confidence thing. We’re a young team.

“I’d say yeah we are considered underdogs but I’m confident in our team, the guys are amazing, they’re why I play. I’m pretty confident in us this year that we’ll get the results,” he said.

But are they title contenders?

“Yeah definitely. It’s just consistency for us. We just need to keep winning.”

Canberra Olympic will host Gungahlin United at O’Connor Enclosed from 3pm on Saturday 24 April.
