Lightning Stun Olympic In Silver Boot

Words: Matt Dorman

Olympic FC slumped to their first defeat of 2015, losing 5-4 to Logan Lightning in their pre-season BLK Silver Boot clash at Lions Stadium on Tuesday night.

Olympic fought back from two goals down to lead at the break, only to be overwhelmed by a spirited Lightning fightback after the restart.

The Football Brisbane Trophy Superstore Premier League side took a surprise lead in the 12 minute when Stephen Green pounced on a miscued clearance in the penalty area.

Blake Cearns then finished from an acute angle to double their advantage in the 37th minute, but a stunning blitz late in the half brought Olympic back into the game.

Danny Byrne first converted from the penalty spot in the 42nd minute following a handball inside the area, before Michael Lee assisted Rhys Meredith in pulling it level just two minutes later.

The crazy period continued when Scott Bow squared for Byrne to tap-in his second and make it 3-2 at half time.

Lightning heads refused to drop and they were rewarded with two goals in quick succession after the restart as Nicholas Kristock and Sam Peacock again turned the game on its head.

Matt Byrne headed last season’s PlayStation® 4 NPL Queensland Grand Finalists level again in the 64th minute, though the drama wasn’t over.

Cearns kept his cool in front of goal in the final minute of normal time to seal his hattrick and all three points for Lightning, ending Olympic’s run of pre-season victories.

Olympic continue their pre-season against Wolves FC in the Macron Cup on Saturday afternoon at AJ Kelly Park in Redcliffe.

Olympic FC  4 (Danny BYRNE 42’ 45’+1, Rhys MEREDITH 44’, Matt BYRNE 64’)
Logan Lightning FC  5 (Stephen GREEN 11’, Blake CEARNS 36’ 90’, Nicholas KRISTOCK 49’, Sam PEACOCK 52’)
