Zozia Sen netted a first-half brace as University of Queensland Women returned to winnings ways with a comfortable 4-0 result over Redlands United Women at Cleveland Showgrounds.

UQFC’s goals all came in a dominant first-half display with Zen’s double adding to goals from Grace Vogler and Vicky Lines.

With the result beyond doubt, the hosts took small solace in preventing the score from blowing out further in the second half.

The win is UQFC’s first since the Easter break and marks their first clean sheet of the season as they move up to seventh in the standings.

Conversely, the result also extends a miserable start to the season for bttom-of-the-table Redlands, who have been kept scoreless in all but one game and are yet to pick up a point from six outings.

Key Moments

7’ – GOAL FOR UQFC – Stephanie White sends a shot into the crossbar but it falls fortuitously for Grace Vogler to tuck into an empty net

13’ – CHANCE FOR REDLANDS – Jordyn Witt’s mis-hit free-kick catches the wind and almost catches out UQFC goalkeeper Danielle Harbot

15’ – CHANCE FOR UQFC – A corner kick somehow advances through a crowded penalty area to find Stephanie White at the back post but she scoops her effort over the crossbar

32’ – GOAL FOR UQFC – A curling shot from outside the penalty area from Zozia Sen is assisted by the wind and floats beyond the reach of Megan Byriel and into the back of the net

45’ – GOAL FOR UQFC – Zozia Sen capitalises on another blocked save by Megan Byriel to notch her double just before half-time

64’ – CHANCE FOR UQFC – Portia Lee threatens from a free-kick just outside the area but Megan Byriel tracks it to make the catch

74’ – CHANCE FOR REDLANDS – Gemma Kline’s run is met by a smart cut-back but Danielle Harbot is relatively untroubled in making the save

76’ – CHANCE FOR UQFC – Zozia Sen cuts a ball inside for Portia Lee, who shoots on the turn but is denied by a well-positioned Megan Byriel

84’ – CHANCE FOR UQFC – Grace Vogler outpaces the tiring Redlands defenders and pulls the trigger from 20 yards but the shot catches the outside of the post

What They Said

“We talked about the positives (at half-time) and what we could do going forward into the second half and I was a little disappointed we couldn’t build on the good work in the first half. With so much position and the girls getting forward so much I think we just lost a little bit of structure. But take nothing away from the girls – I thought they played exceptional.“ – Gary Ward, University of Queensland FC Women coach (stand-in)

“We’ve got a bye next week and then we’ve got a very hard three matches coming up. We’ll go lick our wounds and go back to the training paddock. But this year is about getting ourselves on the park and building from week-to-week.“ – John Blanco, Redlands United FC Women coach
