NEWS: Round 8 of Men’s Div 1 comp played in wintry weather

LAST weekend, Round 8 of the Geelong Region Men’s Division 1 completion was played out in cold and miserable conditions. So much so, that the wintry weather resulted in the Drysdale v Rangers and Barwon v Corio games being washed out.

On Friday night, the round got underway in near freezing conditions at Torquay’s Banyul Warri Reserve as 7th placed Surf Coast hosted 2nd placed Surfside Waves.

In the end, the home side caused an upset to come away with a narrow but invaluable 1-0 victory over the Waves.

Hayden Voss scored the only goal of the match to secure his team the three points. As a result of the victory, Surf Coast moves up from 7th to 4th spot on the table, however Corio, Drysdale and Barwon all have a game in hand as they did not play their games over the weekend.

Also on Friday night, the two bottom sides Barwon Heads and Breakwater Eagles clashed in the battle of the cellar dwellers.

Barwon Heads came away from the game at Barwon Heads Village Park victorious after defeating the visiting Eagles 5-1.

Daniel Lavelle was Breakwater’s only goalscorer. The goalscorers for the winning Barwon Heads were unfortunately not submitted by the club.

This result means that there is now a six-point gap between the two sides, in favour of Barwon Heads. The young Breakwater side is still yet to record a win, eight rounds into the league season.

On Sunday afternoon, Deakin and Lara were the only teams whose game went ahead in the wild and wintry conditions.

Played on the artificial surface at the Deakin University Sports Precinct, the hosting Ducks came away from the duel with a comfortable 5-2 victory over United.

Deakin has moved up to 2nd spot on the table, overtaking the previous second placed Surfside Waves.

They are still six points behind the runaway league leaders Rangers, however, who still have a game in hand.
