NEWS: Armstrong United FC slips into top gear as Geelong’s newest club launches new logo & nickname

THINGS are certainly heating up at Armstrong United FC, with the Geelong region’s newest football club this week launching a new logo, fielding its first team in a social 7-a-side end of season comp as well as submitting its official registration to become a member club affiliated with Football Federation Victoria.

The visually splendid new logo, designed by one of its inaugural committee members Faith Johnstone, incorporates the new club’s official colours of orange and blue as well as the Pelicans nickname.

A Mixed Open Age Armstrong United FC team (pictured) also took to the field for the first time on Wednesday, registering a tournament opening 0-0 draw in the annual Grovedale Soccer Centre’s Social 7-a-side midweek competition at Barwon Soccer Club’s Grovedale Reserve.

In a further boost, work on a new $3 million sports pavilion at the neighbouring Warralily Village is expected to begin in the latter half of this year.

Plans for the magnificent complex, which will cater to a range of new sports clubs in the growth region - including Armstrong United FC - have been released by the City of Greater Geelong council.

According to Council sources, at this stage it appears the construction of the sports pavilion is likely to commence in the second half of 2017 and is expected to be completed in late-2018.

It will include a social room with a kitchen and bar, four change rooms, umpires rooms, meeting spaces and association administration facilities. The council set aside $1.9 million for the project in its 2016-17 budget.

The sports pavilion will be opposite a planned education precinct, which will host a Prep to Year 12 school, specialist school and integrated children’s centre.

In the meantime, the club being likely to use the fully floodlit Sovereign Drive Reserve in the Villawood Estate as its initial home ground in 2018.

Armstrong United FC’s dedicated team of volunteers have been working hard behind the scenes to organise and develop the club in preparation for its inaugural season in the 2018 Geelong Region competitions.

The club has been registered and incorporated, while a bank account has also been opened enabling sponsorship monies to start filtering through to the Pelicans. This week the process to formally register the club with FFV also commenced
