NEWS: Geelong Region Women’s Division 1 – Round 11 Report

DRYSDALE defeated Surf Coast in a top versus third clash, while second placed Deakin Ducks scored ten goals to convincingly win their match and open up a two horse race at the summit of the Geelong Region Women’s Division 1 competition.

Following the completion of Round 11, the Bellarine Peninsula outfit finds itself on top with 29 points, closely followed by the reigning champions Deakin on 27, with third placed Surf Coast slipping well behind on 21 points.

In a highly entertaining clash at Howard Glover Reserve on Saturday, Drysdale ran out comfortable 3-0 winners over Surf Coast courtesy of its dynamic duo striking combination of Serena Clapp and Shannon Daffy. Clapp netted a double to bring her season’s tally to 16 goals, while Shannon Daffy’s single means that she has now scored 13 goals so far this year.

It’s highly unlikely either will catch Deakin’s Hannah Gordon, however, after the current Golden Boot smashed six goals past the opposition goalkeeper to bring her season’s aggregate to a whopping 25 goals! The other goals for Deakin were scored by Ella Catlin-Struthers, Anastasia Globa, Lena Mungenast and Imogen Pratt.

In the battle for 4th spot on the ladder, Kardinia comprehensively defeated the previously 4th placed Barwon 6-3, thanks to a Holly Ryan hat-trick, to triumphantly leapfrog the Grovedale based side into the Top Four.

Kardinia’s other goals were registered by Georgia Ilijevski, Ashlee Stavenuiter and Caelli Wood, who netted her 16th goal of the season. Barwon’s goals all came from singles by Michaela Buchanan, Alyse Lyndal-Cook and Jane Newberry.

In the only Friday night fixture, second last placed Barwon Heads secured its first win of the season courtesy of a 1-0 triumph over third last placed Surfside Waves at the Shell Road Reserve in Ocean Grove. Unfortunately, the name of the lone Hammerheads’ scorer was not submitted.

In Division Two news, Bell Park has opened up a commanding six point gap at the top of the standings with just seven more rounds to be played, following its 1-0 win over the previously second placed Golden Plains on the weekend.

Corio Bay defeated Surfside Waves 5-1 to jump into second spot, just one ahead of the third placed Golden Plains, opening up an intriguing battle between the two to join Bell Park in the promotion hunt for next season’s premier Women’s division in the region.
