NEWS: Barwon to host Kardinia in final round fourth spot decider

IT HAS all come down to the final day of the regular season. For Kardinia International College and Barwon SC, the 90 minutes played this weekend will determine their finals fate in the Geelong Region Women’s Division 1 competition.

In a nailbiting climax to the season, 5th placed Barwon hosts Kardinia College at Grovedale Reserve on Saturday and needs to secure all three points to push its way into the top four and secure a finals' berth.

With only the top four teams in the eight team elite Women’s division qualifying for the finals, the Bell Post Hill based Kardinia heads into the Round 18 clash as favourites, winning its previous two clashes with Barwon this season.

Just as tense will be the battle for the champions’ title with the fate of competition leaders Drysdale SC firmly placed in their own hands.

Drysdale, which leads second placed Deakin Ducks by just two points, will claim the coveted title if it can defeat third placed Surf Coast FC at Banyul Warri Reserve tomorrow.

A loss or even a draw could spell disaster for Drysdale, with the Ducks taking on bottom side Geelong across town at Stead Park in Norlane.

By virtue of their far superior goal difference, thanks largely to the incredible goal scoring exploits of the league’s Golden Boot Hannah Gordon who has amassed a total of 33 goals this season, the Ducks will claim a back to back league title should they defeat Geelong and Drysdale draws against Surf Coast.

In the only other Division 1 fixture, seventh placed Barwon Heads will host sixth placed Surfside Waves in a dead rubber at Village Park in the earlier game.

It is likely that no teams will be relegated from Division 1 at season’s end, rather Division 2 champion Bell Park and runners-up Golden Plains will both be promoted to make the elite division a 10 team competition in 2018.
