NEWS: Men’s Division 1 comp to consist of 10 clubs despite Golden Plains’ withdrawal

DESPITE the untimely withdrawal of the newly promoted Golden Plains from the Men’s Division 1 competition, the Geelong Region’s elite Senior Men’s league will still number ten teams in 2018.

After having finished last season in second spot on the Division 2 ladder, the Bannockburn based side had earnt promotion to Division 1 along with league champions Corio.

Division 1 wooden spooners and first year club FC Leopold along with second bottom placed Surf Coast FC were supposed to go the other way, relegated into Division 2.

Due to Golden Plains’ withdrawal, the Torquay based Coasters have earnt a reprieve and will compete in the elite division in the 2018 season, which will kick off on the weekend of the 13-15th April.

The Draft Fixtures were released this week, although they are likely to be changed before next Tuesday’s deadline with both Barwon Heads and Drysdale awaiting lighting audits which would allow them to stage Friday night matches.

With last season’s undisputed champions Barwon SC entering the FFV Metropolitan State League competition, the Barwon team in the Geelong Region Div 1 league effectively becomes the Grovedale club’s third ranked Men’s team.

Breakwater Eagles, which finished in third spot last year, lost more than half its squad to the Barwon SC State League team. As such, both clubs are expected to find the going tough in 2018, effectively opening the door to a new challenger to the local leagues’ throne.

The teams competing in Men’s Division 1 include: Barwon, Barwon Heads, Breakwater Eagles, Corio, Deakin Ducks, Drysdale, Geelong Rangers, Lara United, Surfside Waves and Surf Coast.
