NEWS: Matilda’s friendly against China in Geelong an historic occasion for more than one reason

WITH THE recent announcement that the Westfield Matildas will meet China on Sunday, 26 November at Geelong’s Kardinia Park as part of a two-game series to be held exclusively in Victoria, it’s also worth noting that this will be the first ever full football international match to be played in Geelong.

In addition to that, the code will also have the honour of being the first sporting event to be held at the newly redeveloped stadium – often regarded as the best regional stadium in Australia – under its new name (GMHBA Stadium), which takes effect as of November 1st.

The Matildas are riding a wave of success in recent years. In 2015 they became the first Australian team - Men’s or Women’s to win a match in the knockout stage of a World Cup.

Earlier this year, the Matilda’s won the inaugural ‘Tournament of Nations’ cup, held in the United States and then followed that up with a successful two match series over international heavyweights Brasil, which also saw a record crowd for female sports matches achieved in Newcastle.

The Australia vs China match follows a host of football events that have recently been held at the Stadium, including hosting European giant Atletico Madrid earlier this year. The clash will see some of the world’s best women’s football players such as Sam Kerr, Lisa De Vanna and Han Peng battle it out in front of the newly re-developed Brownlow Stand.

The historic fixture is expected to be preceeded by an unprecedented marketing/publicity blitz in the days leading up to the game, to help further drive the spectacular growth of female participation in the World Game locally.
