NEWS: Final Finals’ spot up for grabs on last day of Men’s Div 1 regular season

A CLIMACTIC final day of the Geelong Region Men’s Division 1 regular season will see the 4th placed Surfside Waves do battle with the 5th placed Lara United for the last remaining Finals’ Series spot in the elite competitions.

The Waves will make the long trek to the Lara Recreation Reserve on Sunday armed with the knowledge a win or draw will be sufficient to book a spot in next week’s semi-finals.

Lara United, meanwhile, has enjoyed a sterling first year in the company of the region’s elite after earning promotion from Division 2 last year. On Sunday, however, its season will come to an end if the Dark Blues are unable to capture all three points at the Lara Recreation Reserve.

The other intriguing battle in Men’s Division 1 will involve the jostling for second position and a subsequent home ground advantage next week between likely semi-finalists Geelong Rangers and Breakwater Eagles.

The 3rd placed Eagles are away to 7th placed Drysdale at Howard Glover Reserve, while across town the Rangers host second last placed Surf Coast FC at Myers Reserve.

In other games, which are effectively dead rubbers, Barwon Heads will host Deakin Ducks and wooden spooners FC Leopold will be at home to already crowned league champions Barwon SC.

Come Sunday evening, FC Leopold and Surf Coast will be relegated to Division 2 in 2018, while at this stage Corio and Golden Plains will be promoted to next season’s Division 1.
