NEWS: Barwon opens up 10 point gap at top of Men's Div 1 after Round 1

BARWON SC has virtually secured the league title following a narrow but invaluable 1-0 win over Deakin Ducks in Round 13 of the Geelong Region Men’s Division One competition on the weekend.

Played last Friday night at Deakin University’s Sports Field, the clash between the champions elect and the reigning champions was a hard fought tussle between two of the competition’s heavyweights with the only goal of the game coming off the boot of Nathan Drazinic in the 15th minute.

On Sunday afternoon, the shock of the round took place at the White Eagle Club when the second placed Breakwater Eagles went into their game with 4th placed Surfside Waves the raging hot favourites.

That wasn’t to be the case, however, as the Ocean Grove side came, saw and conquered the Eagles in their own nest to run out convincing 5-1 victors.

Alexander Ketchen got the ball rolling for the Waves in the 36th minute, before Jack Peddler, Adrian Bond, Aaron Bond and Stu Mandley all got their names on the scoresheet to solidify Surfside’s top four position.

Breakwater’s stumble means that Barwon has now opened up a sizeable 10 point gap at the top of the League standings with just five games to go.

Lara United has momentarily escaped the drop zone after defeating second last placed Barwon Heads 2-1 at the Lara Recreation Reserve on Sunday. Michael Tolongou and Colin Pollock were the goalscorers for the home side, while Robert Armstrong scored his third goal in two games, since returning for the Hammerheads.

In other Round 13 games, bottom side FC Leopold lost 2-3 to Surf Coast in a competitive contest at home, while Drysdale also suffered the same fate, going down to third placed Geelong Rangers 2-3 at Howard Glover Reserve.

As a result of the loss, Drysdale finds itself five points out of the top four.
