NEWS: GRFC Men’s Division 1 - Round 7 PREVIEW

LARA United will return to the Top Four of the GRFC Men’s Division 1 competition if it can dispose of a resurgent Deakin Ducks in a crucial Round 7 clash at the Deakin University Waurn Ponds campus on Friday night.

Understandably, the reigning Premiers have had an indifferent start to the season after losing its two best squads to the FFV Metropolitan State League 5 competition this year. Nevertheless, the Students are starting to find form and sit pretty in 3rd spot with 10 points.

Lara United, under the guidance of Hayden Coombes, has performed admirably in its first season in the elite division of the local league. Having accumulated a total of eight competition points so far, a win on Friday night would allow the Navy Blues to overtake the Ducks into the Top Four.

Meanwhile across town, 6th placed Surf Coast will be aiming to do the same when it travels to Ocean Grove to take on 4th placed Surfside Waves at Shell Road Reserve on Friday night. A win by two goals or more will allow the Torquay outfit to overtake the Waves.

In the other Friday night fixture, the competition’s pacesetters Barwon SC will host last year’s beaten Grand Finalist Geelong Rangers at Grovedale Reserve.

The ageing Rangers side is struggling this year, finding itself in 8th spot on the ladder after six rounds. A win against ex-Rangers stalwart Dale Harris’ side would, however, ensure the Dark Blues get their season back on track.

There are two games on Sunday to complete the round. The first will see second placed Breakwater Eagles host bottom side FC Leopold in the ‘Eastern Suburban Derby’ at the White Eagle Club at 1:15pm.

Seventh placed Drysdale, which recorded its first win of the season in a 7-0 rout over an undermanned Leopold side last week, will be aiming to get on a bit of a roll when it hosts second last placed Barwon Heads at its Howard Glover Reserve home base at 3pm.
