As expected today has been full of excitement, rivalry, intense focus and some controversy.
Each of the 6 teams played their first test of 3, knowing that to have a chance of winning the overall title each win was incredibly important.
The upset of the day was the 18’s girls where Australia beat NZ by 11-4. Everyone was expecting a much closer game.
Two of the games ended in ties, which show how tight it was and in a drop off NZ and Aus won one each.
The final game of the day unfortunately ended in controversy with a NZ player being sent off in the first half and a penalty try awarded to Australia, which has now resulted in a protest being lodged by NZ. The outcome will be known tomorrow morning.
The final results of the day were
Australia win
18 Girls
20 Girls
20 Mixed (by drop off)
20 Boys (under protest)
NZ win
18 Mixed
18 Boys (by drop off)
Australia lead the series by 4 wins to 2 (pending the protest outcome)
Tomorrow each team will play 2 test each. The final round begins with 18’s Girls at 12.00pm on the Douglas Field and will conclude with 20’s Boys commencing at 5.00pm. At that point we will know have a Youth Trans Tasman winner. Medals to the winning teams of each grade and the overall trophy will be presented by NZ Prime Minister, John Keys at approx 6.15pm.
Can the Kiwis turn it around tomorrow?
