Ron Threlfall has umpired football in Bendigo and surrounding districts for a lifetime. He was a member of the BUA when the BUA was first awarded the opportunity to umpire in the BFL seniors in 1983. The family name of Threlfall has been synonymous with the BUA. In 1984, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1993 and 1995 he umpired the BFL Senior Grand Finals. Ron also umpired the BFL in interleague clashes on three occasions.
Ron Threlfall led the BUA through turbulent times in 2001-2002 when the BFL and the BUA threatened to split. As chairman he was able to galvanise the members and ensure their support when the very existence of the BUA was under threat. This achievement would rank as one of Ron’s finest. Ron was president from 1999-2003, he then returned to the board as General Manager in 2005 a position he held until the end of 2007. Over many years Ron has acted as Chairman of Selectors for the BUA and his active involvement has ensured the best umpires umpire the right games for their ability level.
He has now retired from the BUA to follow his son Ryan forge a blossoming career as a footballer in the BFL. Ron was umpire of the year in and is a life member of the BUA.
Without Ron’s contribution and commitment to the BUA and the BFL the independence which sets us apart would no longer exist. He has been a larger the life figure for the BUA in the BFL.
Ron was inducted into the BFNL Hall of Fame in 2010
