AFL Goldfields is well represented in the AFL Women's Academy.
AFL Goldfields is excited to announce that four AFL Goldfields Female footballers have qualified for the 2018 AFL Women's Academy Squad.
Sophie Van De Huevel (Ballarat Swans), Georgia Clarke (Ararat Storm), and Rene Caris (ACU Sovereigns) from the Greater Western Victoria Rebels, and Molly Warburton (Gisborne Rookies) from the Calder Cannons join 40 other players to receive an AFL Women's Academy Scholarship to take part in Australian football and personal development camps over the next 12-months.
This squad follows the success of the inaugural Academy where 11 footballers found homes on AFLW club lists in last week's AFL Women's draft.
AFL Goldfields Female Football Manage Krista Woodroffe says that the Academy will be a big stepping stone for the four local girls.
"They have been given a chance to showcase their talent and in doing so, will open doors for other footballers in the region to receive similar opportunities in the future," Woodroffe says.
"The AFL Goldfields region now has talent pathways available for young women to develop their football ability, leadership skills, and knowledge of the game."
"AFL Goldfields is driven to see more players in the competition play football at their highest level."
Sophie is a star in the midfield and at half-back for the Rebels. She represented Vic Country in the Under 18 National Championships and was selected in the NAB AFL Women's Under 18 All Australian Squad. She has played State cricket for Victoria.
"Sophie is a naturally talented player with a strong body and core strength," Woodroffe says.
"She is naturally a defensive player with the ability to run off her opponents and attack up the ground."
Georgia is a versatile player with the Rebels; an Under 18 All Australian after playing with Vic Country; Ararat premiership player and league runner-up in the goal kicking in the Ballarat Youth Girls competition.
"Georgia is eager to learn and strive for the best," Woodroffe says.
"She leads by example, on and off the field with her preparation and does extra training outside of club football."
Rene was a stand-out in the ruck for the Rebels this year; she was awarded selection in the Under 18 All Australian Squad while playing for Vic Country and combines her football skills by also playing netball with ACU Sovereigns.
"She reads the play well, has great foot speed and agility and gets in a great position to contest the football," Woodroffe says.
Molly was selected in the Under 18 All Australian Squad on the back of impressive performances with Vic Metro. She was the winner of the 2017 AFL Goldfields Female Football Riddell Youth Girls Best and Fairest and is a member of the Rookies' Youth Girls Leadership Group.
"Molly is naturally quick and possesses incredible closing speed, is adaptable and can play in the ruck, at half back, and wing," Woodroffe says.
The squad will train with AFL clubs in November and December; attend high-performance training camps in December and April; have access to athlete management systems, AFL coaches, and sports science and medicine staff in the lead up to the 2018 AFLW National Draft.
