Into competition again.
Having not been able to return to Kiribati yet - and now even more unlikely since Covid 19 has landed on Tarawa (capital island of the Gilbert Islands) - Lataisi returned to Australia from Tokyo and has been helped with accommodation by his coach.
He has continued to do training for the sprints but recently has been trying Long Jump off a short run, concentrating on solid take-off and gaining height. (As a High Jumper he has a basic approach and technique to achieve that !)
On Saturday, February 5th., at QSAC in Brisbane, still competing for the Ignition Club, Lataisi ran in both short sprints. The Meeting celebrated the Darren Thrupp Shield, part of the Queensland Shield Series. This was a night meeting, cool under lights and with a swirling stiff breeze. In Heat 5 of the M100m. with a tail-wind of 2.2 m/s. he finished 5th. of 9 in 11.52. Later in the M200m. Heat 3, this time into a head-wind of -2.8 m/s, he finished 7th. of 9 in 24.06. The conditions were not condusive to good times !
Hopefully he will have further opportunities to compete later in the southern summer ! If he can prove a consistent ability, the main targets will be the World Championships in Oregon, USA, in July and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK, in August.
