CONSOLIDATING FIFTH PLACE.
Kaitinano continued on Day 2. of the Heptathlon where she left off at the end of Day 1. !! First in the LJ she cleared 4.42m. at her first attempt. For the second she was again smack on the board but showed her competitive inexperience by killing a better jump by walking back through the pit ! ("I was dreaming" she said !) She did not improve further. In the Javelin, after a short sharpening session this morning, she did three valid throws, all PBs. The middle throw was the best at 31.75m. for another NR (old record 31.03). Thus to the 800m. and, having placed 4th. in the Javelin, she went one place better here with a fast finish and a PB time of 2-51.3. This gave her fifth place in the Heptathlon and an overall total of 3456 points and another NR for a new event.
BETERU'S RECORD DOUBLE.
Having set a new NR in his Heat of the 400m. Hurdles yesterday, Beteru Ateri completed a Record double by maintaining his form in the 110m. Hurdles and clipping 0.1 off his old record. His new time is 16.80 secs. This form is in total contrast with his performances at the OAA Grand Prix in Cairns last month, but maybe that experience helped. This brought to eight the total of KAA NRs broken or set here - an outstanding result even with two more days to go !
A TIRED BANRENGA !
Finally today, Banrenga Baikia competed in the W1500m. in taped bare feet ! As other athletes have, she stayed with the pace for 700m. but then her legs tightened and she finished 7th. of the eight runners and very tired in 5-50.41. Even so, this is only five seconds outside her best.
WHAT MORE ACHIEVEMENTS ?
It is always dangerous to predict results because athletes are human and fallible ! However we still have the MThrows and MRelays to come and all the athletes involved have done much preparatory work - so, as ever, we will see !
Although the drizzle threatened, most of today was dry and sunny with a swirling wind.
