Zebras Thrive In The Wet

The Hobart Zebras had no issues adapting to the wet and wild conditions at the NTCA, as they stormed to an early 3-0 lead on route to a 4-0 win over Northern Rangers. After enduring a delayed kick-off due to the pitch being underwater, the Zebras wasted little time hitting their stride as they claimed a comfortable win to remain in third place.

The ability to master the conditions quicker was the key for the Zebras victory, taking the lead via one of their first meaningful attacks. Jakub Sklenar played a clever ball into the box for Mathew Sanders who drew a save from Sam Whatman but Isky Van Doorne was lurking to bundle home the rebound and put his side ahead.

Moments later the lead was doubled as another rebound, off the post from a Jayden Hey curler, was pounced on by Matthew Pace who calmly slotted home.

The Zebras third came from the penalty spot, as Jesse Fulton brought down. Whilst he appeared to have gotten a toe to the ball first, he took plenty of the man afterwards, enough in the referee’s mind to point to the spot. Up stepped Sanders who made no mistake.

The second half saw a much improved Rangers side, and the final score of 4-0 would ultimately flatter the Zebras.

Rangers missed a series of gilt-edged chances throughout the game, missing empty nets, hitting posts and doing everything bar score in the final third.

How they didn’t at least pull one back was a mystery, and the Zebras then rubbed salt in the wounds late on, by taking one of their few second-half chances to see the game end 4-0.

Mathew Sanders showed the clinical edge the Rangers had so badly lacked as he calmly lofted the ball over Whatman and into the back of the net.

The win puts the Zebras back on track and keeps them in third place ahead of next weeks make or break clash with the Devonport Strikers.
