Early signs for new rivalry

The two newest clubs in WA's top competition are already starting to build a rivalry, according to Perth Glory’s Borbor Sambini.

Glory and Subiaco have been paired in the National Premier Leagues WA Rivalry Round and will meet for only the second time in their history at Intiga Stadium on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

But despite the fledgling status of the contest, Sambini believes it will develop into a genuine rivalry, judging by their first contest.

“I think it’s exciting because Subi have a good team and when we played against them the first time they came out fighting and it was a great game,” he said.

In their first encounter in March, Subiaco took the lead through Jordan Rhodes’ penalty before Harry O’Brien and Riley Woodcock scored to seal a 2-1 win for Glory.

Subiaco have had a tough introduction to soccer’s top league but they climbed off the bottom of the table with a 3-3 draw against Cockburn City last week, which followed their first win of the campaign a week earlier against Armadale.

Nathan Diaz feels Subiaco have been better than their place on the table suggests.

“The last time we played Glory we were leading and I think we can get the win this time,” he said. “We’ve performed well in recent weeks and we don’t want to be finishing last at the end of the season, so that’s motivating us to keep giving it our best.”
