Bayswater triumph in fiery Italian Derby

Report by Matthew Corvi

Bayswater City have ended Perth SC’s perfect start to the season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Finance 365 Stadium on a warm Saturday night.

A fantastic effort from Bayswater’s Bor Bor Sam would prove the difference between the two sides, condemning Perth to their first loss of the season.

Perth started the stronger out of the two sides, having multiple early efforts at goal. After Gustavo Catarcione beat his man, Devin Spence pulled off a save of the highest calibre keeping the scores level.

Catarcione would have another great chance to take the lead for his side shortly after, but his touch would let him down and give Bayswater the chance to block the shot.

Despite Perth having most of the early chances, it would be Bayswater who would open the scoring in the 25th minute. After a good run out wide, Jason Micro passed the ball across the face of the goal, setting up an easy tap in for David Heagney.

With the second half only two minutes old, Perth found a way back into the match. After an easily conceded corner, Adrian Madaschi was the first to get his head on the ball, giving his side a crucial equaliser.

Bayswater wouldn’t be kept back for long however, with Bor Bor Sam taking back the lead with a fantastic effort. After taking on his man and cutting inside, he curled the ball into the top corner, leaving Francis Soale with no chance.

With the game coming to a close, Perth had two huge chances to steal a point in injury time. After Spence pulled off a great save to stop Harley Orr from scoring, Aleks Jovic hit the post with almost the last kick of the game, but the ball bounced the wrong way and out for a goal kick.

Despite the positive result, Bayswater City coach Chris Coyne was not entirely happy with his team’s performance.

“I thought we were the side that had 70% possession, but when you have that much possession you need to take your chances,” he said.

“I’m not happy, I want more and I don’t want to concede sloppy goals. A free header from four yards out isn’t acceptable.”

Perth SC coach Ramon Falzon was frustrated with his team’s performance.

“We missed the early chances, which is ultimately what cost us,” he said. “First half we missed four huge chances.

“We conceded an easy goal in the transition which we’ve been working hard to avoid. We should have been leading by two at half time.”
