NPL Round 1 Wrap

Monaro Panthers 1 (Basser-Silk 30’)def. by Canberra Olympic 4 (Brown 54’, Ihegie 68’, Livermore 90+2, James 90+4’)

Canberra Olympic has defeated home favourites Monaro Panthers 4-1 at Riverside Stadium, following an impressive second-half performance.

Monaro Panthers looked to be in control at half-time with a 1-0 lead thanks to a bottom corner strike from Ben Basser-Silk in the 30th minute.

However, it all went downhill for Monaro after the first 45, with Olympic equalising from a free kick taken by Cale Brown.

Soon Monaro were down to 10 men, and Aisosa Ihegie thumped it into the bottom corner to make it 2-1 in the 67th.

Two goals in extra time from Olympic’s Tyson Livermore and Alen James sealed the victory for the away side leaving the Monaro fans silent.

West Canberra Wanderers FC 1 (Fields 62’) def. by Gungahlin United FC 4 (Anderson 8’, Thornton 18’, Green 80’, Garang 90’)

Gungahlin United has come out firing in the opening round of the Capital Football NPL1, taking home a dominant 4-1 win over West Canberra Wanderers FC.

Just eight minutes in and the first shot was fired, with Roy Anderson squaring up just outside the six yard box to put Gungahlin on to the scoreboard.

Some solid goalkeeping was on display at both ends of the park, but in the 18th minute Thorton shot one into the top right hand corner and it just couldn’t be stopped.

West Canberra Wanderers’ fans went wild when a corner kick landed at the feet of Lachlan Fields who was able to give the hosts their first and only goal for the afternoon.

Continuing to maintain control though, Jack Green and Moses Garang solidified the victory with goals in the 80th and 90th minute.

Tuggeranong United FC 0 def. by Belconnen United FC 1 (Bailey 9’)

Tuggeranong United may have seen 10 shots on target but frustratingly none were able to connect with the back of the net in their Round 1 clash against Belconnen United.

The first and sole goal for the afternoon came from Belconnen United’s Darren Bailey, when in the 9th minute, a corner kick flew across the goal, before Connor Nolan put the ball back in for Bailey, who sealed the deal.

Tigers FC 0 def. by Canberra Croatia FC 3 (Kalfas 32’, Keir 49’, Kista 73’)

A cold and rainy afternoon in Cooma saw Canberra Croatia FC dominate their Round 1 encounter with Tigers FC.

From their goalkeeping to their attack, CCFC was a force to be reckoned with the only goal in the first half coming from Nikolaos Kalfas.

In the 49th minute, a corner from Jason Ugrinic sailed over to Ryan Keir who headed it in for their second goal.

Aimilio Kista fired a shot past several Tigers defenders to see the hosts end the afternoon three goals up.
