The second-ever installment of the NPL2 Riverina Derby takes place in the Grand Final, as Yoogali SC takes on Wagga City Wanderers at Deakin Stadium on Sunday afternoon (4 October). One thing is guaranteed on Sunday afternoon - there will be a new NPL2 Champion. But will it be the new kids on the block, Yoogali SC, who have impressed in their debut NPL2 season by winning eight of their nine games? Or will the Wanderers head back to Wagga with the NPL2 trophy in just their second season in the competition?

Yoogali SC

Yoogali could not have dreamt for a better start to life in Capital Football's NPL2 competition. From the moment they traveled to Calwell to face the Brindabella in Round 1, defeating the Blues 4-1, Yoogali was a side on a mission. Their comprehensive 4-0 win against last year's finalists O'Connor Knights and 6-4 win against reigning premiers Canberra White Eagles put the competition on alert. Not even moving the remainder of their games to O'Connor Park in Cootamundra seemed to upset Yoogali, as they brushed aside ANU, Narrabundah and Wagga. Even Yoogali coach Luke Santolin admits his side have exceeded expectations this season. With only one loss to their name this season, Yoogali will start as red hot favourites against Wagga.

Wagga City Wanderers

Wagga set the tone for their season in the opening round, causing a massive boilover when they defeated ANU 3-2. The draw was kind to the Wanderers, as they played their first three matches at home in Gissing Oval, where they claimed seven points out of a possible nine. They took their strong form to Canberra, where they upset O'Connor Knights before the wheels looked they were starting to fall off, suffering losses to Queanbeyan City and Yoogali. But the side showed great composure to ensure their spot in the NPL2 semi-finals with a comprehensive win over Narrabundah before an entertaining 3-3 draw with Canberra White Eagles. They booked their spot in the big dance with a thrilling 2-1 extra-time win against Queanbeyan City last Sunday but they will be without Luke Stevens, who was arguably their best player in the semi-final, which is a huge blow for the Wanderers.

Head to Head

These two sides have only met once in the NPL2 and that was in Round 8 at Solar Mad Stadium. On that day, Yoogali got off to the perfect start, scoring in just the third minute thanks to the league's leading goalscorer Danny Roche. Goals to Calvin Roddie and Mitch Bagiante either side of half time put the result beyond doubt before Isaac Brooker converted a penalty in the 73rd minute to put Wagga on the scoreboard.
