A lighting fault moments before the first match last night at Dromana's Recreation Reserve resulted in a hasty move of the U14 and U16 MPJFL v FDJFL matches to Rosebud's Olympic Park and the postponement of the U15 match until Sunday. After all of those hurdles, two exciting matches kicked of the Subway Junior Interleague Carnival.
After all of the drama and delays, the U14s match got underway under clearing skies and an enthralling battle ensued. Frankston District Juniors (FDJFL) got the early jump and went into the first break with a 12 point lead. In the second term, the MPJFL rebounded from their slow start to take the acendency by 1 point at the main break. An armwrestle followed with each team kicking 1 major in each of the next two quarters, with MPJFL running out victors on the scoreboard by 2 points. Under the carnival scoring system, a team receives 2 points for each winning quarter and a further 2 points for winning the match. Therefore, for the carnival ladder, MPJFL received 7 points from the match and FDJFL received 3.
In the second match at Rosebud, the U16 outfits from MPJFL and FDJFL provided another tight contest. In a low scoring affair, each team kicked one goal in each quarter with the exception of FDJFL in the second term. On the scoreboard, this provided the difference in the end with the MPJFL leading at the conclusion of the game by 6 points. However, under the carnival points scoring system, the two teams walk away from the match with 5 points each. FDJFL won the first and last quarters (2 points each) as well as tieing the third (1 point), with MPJFL winning the second quarter (2 points), the match (2 points) and tieing the third (1 point).
In the other U16 match played last night at Shepley Oval, Dandenong Ranges JFL 5.2.(32) defeated South East Juniors 1.1.(7). DRJFL received the full ten points for the match after winning each quarter.
The U15 match postponed from last night (FDJFL v MPJFL) will be played on Sunday June 8 at 3.30pm at Casey Fields Oval 2, Berwick-Cranbourne Rd, Cranbourne East.
