Many BSS sailors competed in the two Laser Masters Events held in March at RQYS.
First up there was the National Masters held over three days of strong winds that tested all 150 masters who competed. Dan Blight took 2nd place in the Apprentice Full Rigs with Dave Harrison 4th and Chris Connell 10th. In the Grand Master Radials BSS was represented by Jim Sloan, Jeremy Creech and Lewie Thatcher.
In the Master Radial division Christine Bridge took 6th overall and first female sailor, while your humble webmaster kept the wooden spooners honest.
In the World Laser Masters, there were 233 sailors competing over 6 days and 12 races in medium to light winds. Peter Craig deserves special mention for competing in all 12 races using a 4.7 Rig and placing 9th out of 12, three weeks after breaking two ribs in a fall. His tactic of minimising the number of tacks must have worked!
In the Grand Master Radials Jim and Jeremy again upheld the honour of BSS. In the Master Radials with 39 entrants, Christine Bridge took 8th overall and again first female sailor. Commodore Steve Geck quickly came to terms with the different skills needed to excel on the bay, placing 21st overall with a best result of 7th in the last race. Dave Collecot and the Webmaster fought out 34th and 35th places.
The Apprentice Full Rig division was keenly contested with a current dual Olympian, Matias Del Solar from Chile showing them all how it is done. Dan Blight took 6th and Chris Connell 9th, Nigel Markey took 14th, coming home with a wet sail with placings of 3, 10 and 7 in the final days racing. Steve Gilbert placed 19th and came away with plenty of experience in how to sail in the bay and will be all the better for the experience. Tim Barker took 32nd in a tough field of 40 in the Masters Full Rig division.
