Star year for Attard

Greater Macedon resident Adrian Attard has won the Melbourne Futsal League Referee of the Year in only his second year on the Football Federation Victoria Futsal Referee Panel.

Adrian, aged 20, was chosen by FFV and the Victorian Futsal Referee Technical Committee, with the award presented at the Futsal 500 dinner on 4 December.

When a shin injury put a halt to an eleven year playing career, Adrian decided to take refereeing more seriously.

“I got stress reactions in my shin a couple of years back so I decided to focus on refereeing as it’s not as hard on your body as playing is,” he said.

“I had been refereeing in Macedon for four years before I started on the FFV panel and one of my friends convinced me to do a course. I gave it a try and grew to like it a lot more than what I originally thought I would.

“I love the quality of games at this level. It’s amazing to be a part of it. I enjoy it and I love a challenge.”

A distinguished season saw Adrian excel at the FFA Futsal National Championships, FFV Melbourne Futsal League and FFV Futsal Club Championships before being called up to officiate in the hummel F-League, Australia’s national Futsal league.

Football Federation Victoria Futsal Manager Chris Ryan said that in only two years, Adrian has already established himself as one of Victoria’s top Futsal referees.

“Adrian has honed his skills at a social level before moving up to the FFV Panel and has transitioned seamlessly,” he said.

“He was always a good referee, but he has improved so much over the past year.

“He is without doubt a very worth winner of the award and I’m sure he has a bright future ahead of him.”

Adrian himself said that the award has come as a huge surprise.

“It was a dream for me to win this award. I’ve been friends with Shams Shahabbi for a year and a half now and he is such an amazing referee and won it last year, so to get the same award as him the year after is great.”

Adrian will next be in action at the National Futsal Championships in Canberra in January.
