Eight named as 'away game curse' is brokenMICHAEL McLEAN's NT Thunder has broken its away duck with a win over Broadbeach on the Gold Coast in the QAFL at the weekend. And the Thunder has double the cause for celebration this week with eight of its players, five Indigenous, named in an initial Queensland squad to play against Tasmania and Victoria next month.
The Thunder made light work over the Cats at Gold Coast Stadium, Carrara, with a 50-point win and now moving back into the top five.
Peter MacFarlane, Mark McLean and Marty Smith have been named in a provisional 38-man squad for Queensland's interstate clash with Tasmania in Hobart on June 7. While Bradley Palipuaminni, James Puautjimi and Damien Roe (pictured) were named to play in the Maroons' under-21 side against the VAFA in Melbourne on June 6.
The Thunder this weekend will play its first game in Alice Springs. The Territorians will play fellow QAFL newcomers, the winless Western Magpies, at Traeger Park.
It will be a smorgasboard of football in The Alice, too. Two AFLCA matches will bookend the QAFL game: Pioneer and Yuendumu will play at 1pm, the Thunder and Magpies at 3.20pm, and Ltyentye Apurte and Federals at 6pm.
