Capitals Split Road Double Last Weekend

The Brisbane Capitals SBL & QBL teams hit the road last weekend.  The SBL men and women headed to Logan with the men backing up on Sunday in Caboolture against the Suns and the QBL teams ventured into Central Queensland for a couple of games against Gladstone Power and the Bundaberg Bears/Bulls with all teams spliting the trip with one win and one loss.

The QBL teams jumped into the luxury coach at 6am on Friday morning arriving in Gladstone around 2pm for a rest and then the game later that night.  Thanks to the Metro Hotel & Apartments in Gladstone we stayed the night, had a bit of a sleep in, a big cooked breakfast feast by the pool and at 10:30am left for Bundy.

The few hours in Bundy were similar the night day before with a good feed, a little rest and then the games before jumping into the bus again and heading home, arriving back at Auchenflower Stadium at 2:30am Sunday morning.

Check out the results below:
SBL WOMEN (6 – 1) 3rd on SBL LADDER
Brisbane Capitals 53 defeat Logan Thunder 51
These girls have moved up a spot on the SBL ladder after handing Logan Thunder their first loss of the season by just 2 points.  Despite being down 13 – 8 at the end of the first quarter, the Caps took pulled back at the main break to be down by just one point 18 – 19 in a half that could only be described as ugly.  However things improved in the second half, pouring in 18 points for the period while restricting the Thunder to just 14 and taking a 3 point lead into the fourth quarter.  The Thunder didn’t go away even when down by as much as 6 points in the fourth quarter, but missed their chance to send the game into overtime from the free-throw line gifting the Caps the 2 point win.  Kate Heal returned from injury to lead her team with 16 points and Abi Marsh with 12 points.

SBL MEN (4 – 4) 4th on SBL LADDER
Logan Thunder 61 defeat Brisbane Capitals 59
Brisbane Capitals 81 defeat Caboolture Suns66
The boys are in the top four after splitting their weekend results against Logan Thunder and Caboolture Suns on the road.  With the QBL teams on the road also up to Central Queensland, both Jake Davis and Seb Windsor were not available for the Logan game however had every right to go into that contest confident with the hosts having only 2 wins under their belt from 6 games, however the Thunder had other ideas to sneak home by just 2 points.  Christian Lam had a game high 18 points with Matt Strybos adding 10 points.  The following day, the boys travelled up the M1 this time to Caboolture to take on the last placed but always dangerous Suns.  Despite the return of Davis and Windsor, it was a tight encounter throughout until late in the fourth quarter when the Caps really asserted themselves for the 15 point win although the final score did not reflect just how close the game was throughout.  Jake Davis led with 21 points and Matt Strybos is continuing his fine form with 17 points.

QBL WOMEN (3 – 5) 9th on QBL LADDER
Gladstone Power 122 defeat Brisbane Capitals 79
Brisbane Capitals 78 defeat Bundaberg Bears 70
The women were going to be tested against the former been back- to back-to back Champions and a very tough group for any opponent.  The hosts burst out of the blocks connecting on 5 three-point bombs and took an early 8 point lead into the first break.  The lead extended to 13 points for the hosts, 60 – 47 as the teams went into the main break but it was not all doom and gloom for the Caps.  The third period was relatively close with both Gladstone and Brisbane making 9 and 8 baskets each respectively but the hosts were sent to the free-throw line a whopping 15 times to just 2 in the third which proved the difference of a 30 – 17 point quarter.  It was similar in the fourth quarter as the hosts enjoyed yet another 15 trips to the free-throw line in that period to just 8 for the Caps.  Mikaela King (sponsored by Professionals, Toowong) led her team with 18 points, Paris Johnson with 14 points and Molly Windsor (sponsored by endota spa, Rosalie) enjoyed a nice come back from injury with 10 points.  The following night they took on the Bundaberg Bears and it was dejavu all over again.  The Caps started ON FIRE and everything was clicking all over the court to take a 27 – 11 lead into the first break.  However the home team turned it into a game again trailing by only 5 points at halftime and the stage was set for a tight finish once again.  The Caps managed to hold off a spirited comeback attempt from the Bears to hold that margin and take the 8 points road win.  Paris Johnson added yet another double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds with Mikhaela Donnelly, Jess Wallis and Brook Couper (sponsored by Young Guns Container Crew) all adding 14 points each in an all-round team effort.

QBL MEN (5 – 3)
Brisbane Capitals 86 defeat Gladstone Power 72
Bundaberg Bulls 99 defeat Brisbane Capitals 67
With the loss of Drew Phillips (sponsored by P3 Financial Planning) with a broken leg two weeks ago, the Caps were still quietly confident on this road double and started off well.  The winless hosts had no answer in the first quarter and trailed 11 – 24 at the first break.  The lead ballooned out to 18 points before the home team awoke and made a run.  Midway through the third period the hosts pulled to within 4 points however the Caps hung tough to run away in the final for the 14 point road win.  Dane Suttle Jr led with 18 points, Ryan Jeffries (sponsored by Ipsure Insurance & financial Planning) adding 17 points and both Dusty Rychart and Anthony Kopcikas (sponsored by Acceleration) supporting with 15 points each.  The following night against the Bundaberg Bulls, the Caps were looking to exact revenge from their loss the week before at Auchenflower and from the first quarter, things looks set for a tight one with the Bulls just leading 24 – 23 at the break.  The Bulls then exploded into action pouring in 26, 25 and 24 for the remaining three quarters while allowing the Caps 17, 14 and 13 in reply to seal their runaway win against the Caps for the second straight week.  Dane Suttle Jr led again with 19 points, Dusty Rychart with another double- double of 14 points and 13 rebounds and Tommy Ammar added 12 points.
