Capitals SBL Men take Top Spot

The Brisbane Capitals Men’s Team have leapfrogged into top spot of the SBL ladder with a convincing 24 point win over the undefeated Warwick Wildcats 80 – 56 last Saturday afternoon at NAB Stadium, Auchenflower.

In a turnaround from the previous weeks shock loss to West Logan, the Capitals looked sharp. Big man Tom Malloy opened up the account for the Capitals scoring the first 4 points for the hosts finishing with quarter with 6 of the teams 16 points.

In the second quarter it was the Capitals backcourt that did the damage with guards Josh Cunningham and Christian Lam combining for 13 of the teams 23 second quarter points to head into the main break leading 39 – 22.

The Wildcats mounted a mini run in the third with only a single point separating that periods scores but the damage was already done in the first half. The Capitals finished strong with another 20-point final term enroot to the easy win.

“There’s no such thing as an easy win in this league,” head coach Michael Van Dongen said.

“But we’ll take them that’s fur sure. Pack it in with the rest and onto the next one,” he added.

After lamenting their loss from last week, the Capitals could have cemented themselves in that top position with this win.

“We would have been 6 – 0 and way on top of the ladder, giving us a bit of breathing space at the top but there’s two or three teams right up there with us so we’re in for an arm wrestle that’s for sure,” Van Dongen concluded.

The Capitals were led by Josh Cunningham and Christian Lam, both scoring 16 points each, with Cunningham grabbing 8 rebounds and 4 steals while Lam also joined the party with 6 rebounds and 2 steals.

For the visiting Wildcats Damien Quinn led with 15-points and Declan Starasts adding 11.

The Capitals boast an imposing 5 – 1 win/loss record now and next week host the Suncoast Clippers of Maroochydore who are yet to win a game.

The SBL women will be back in action also after a bye round looking to keep their winning streak alive also.

Both games tip off at 3pm at NAB Stadium, Auchenflower followed by the QBL women’s and men’s games also against the Suncoast Clippers.
