Meteors Prepare For Pacific Affair

The McDonald’s Mackay Meteors will have their first official hit-out of 2015, when they play an exhibition game against the Papua New Guinea men’s national team at Mackay Multi-Sports Stadium on Tuesday night.

While the team is still a few signings away from completing their Queensland Basketball League roster, many of the locally based Meteors will have their chance to impress against their pacific counterparts.

It will also be the first opportunity for Meteors fans to see new recruit Christopher Cedar in action.

The Papua New Guinean squad is currently at the back end of a seven day training camp, which has been based in Mackay.  The camp forms an integral part of the teams preparation for the Pacific Games, which is being held in Port Moresby in July.  Half of the twenty-man national squad faced off against the Under 23 Mackay Meteors team yesterday, while the other half will have their work cut out for themselves against members of the Meteors senior QBL team.

Mackay Basketball Manager and Papua New Guinea Head Coach Joel Khalu said it will be an exciting matchup for local basketball fans.

“We’ve got some terrific athletes in the P.N.G squad and guys that can play the game above the rim are always fun to watch,” Khalu said.

“We’ll definitely have a tough job ahead playing against the McDonald’s Meteors, but it’s a challenge that I know the guys are looking forward to.”

“It’s also a great opportunity for our local Mackay based QBL players to get their pre-season training underway. We haven’t had any team practice time on court as yet for the Meteors, so a few of the guys might be a bit rusty.”

“Overall it should be an entertaining game though and hopefully we can get a few people in the grandstands to help build an atmosphere."

The matchup between the McDonald’s Meteors and Team P.N.G will tip off at 7:30pm at the Crater.  Entry to the game is via gold coin donation.
