After an exhaustive process Basketball SA and SA Country Basketball have appointed David Ingham to the newly created role of State High Performance Manager.

David Ingham has 27 years of basketball experience as a player and a coach. Born in Adelaide, he played all of his junior basketball here including six years as a South Australian State Team athlete, a member of the Australian U20 Team and an AIS scholarship holder. He went on to play NBL for the Brisbane Bullets and was also a squad member of the Adelaide 36ers.

As a coach Ingham has been an assistant coach with three NBL teams and Head Coach of the Brisbane Bullets. He has extensive coaching experience overseas in Qatar and China. In 2006 he was the Qatar Men’s National Team Assistant Coach and Head Coach at Al Arabi Sports Club. He has been working in China since 2009 and his most recent role was as Head Coach of the Jiangxi Dragons Basketball Club during their first year in the Chinese NBL.

“I believe we have secured a well-credentialed, passionate South Australian coach that has a good work ethic and strong communication skills. I am confident that we can work with David to start rebuilding our performance and development programs to make SA basketball regain a reputation as one of the best states for performance outcomes” said Basketball SA CEO Mark Hubbard.

The role of State High Performance Manager is responsible for developing and overseeing programs that holistically improve talent identification and player and coach development. Mr. Ingham will oversee the delivery of programs from community to underpinning level across the state; and directly manage South Australia’s Basketball Centre of Excellence program.

SA Country Basketball Executive Officer Stuart Macdonald said he was impressed with Mr. Ingham’s appreciation for the needs and challenges related to Country Basketball. He said “From a regional perspective he demonstrated a great understanding of what is required including the development of the network systems; our pathway programs; as well as what is required to support the delivery of quality basketball in regional areas. We are looking forward to a fresh start for the country high performance program and are very optimistic about the direction we are heading in”.

Mr Ingham said “I am South Australian born and bred, I spent my junior playing career here and I have always wanted to give back to the South Australian Basketball Community .This was an excellent opportunity to do that and not just for metropolitan Adelaide where I played basketball but also to the whole community state-wide”.

“I am looking forward to continuing on with the great work that Neil Gliddon did over a long period of time. Basketball Australia wide is changing with the new national coaches and their new positions as well as changes to the pathways. So it is a good time to come in and help change the direction of South Australian Basketball at the same time as the national body is changing their directions” he said.

Mr Ingham will take the helm on Monday November 4 and will immediately be involved in the recruitment of two new player and coach development staff, one of which will be metropolitan based and the other will service country regions. The new look High Performance Department will work closely with the Player and Coach Development Panel which will be comprised of a select group of expert advisors led by chair Jan Stirling who was also part of the recruitment panel. Further appointments to the panel will be made over the coming weeks.
