Review Tuesday 4th Oct.

With only one game left in the first round, the ladder is starting to sort its self out.

In the Women’s Competition, Ulverstone is still undefeated, while Penguin, Somerset and Devonport make up the top four. At this stage, Wynyard and Burnie are a further two games behind and will need to start beating the top teams if they are going to make a run for the finals.

In the Men’s Competition, Burnie is still undefeated, while Penguin and Latrobe are in close pursuit. As it stands, any one of four teams could take out the coveted fourth spot. Smithton have three wins while, Devonport, Somerset and Ulverstone have two wins a piece.

Ulverstone will take on Burnie tonight at home. The last time they met Burnie women were in the game until half time but fell away badly in the second half. Burnie will be relying on Bec Heald and Hayley Shephard to get them over the line. If Burnie are going to be a chance they will need to shut down Sarah O’Neill’s offensive game.

Burnie Men will start clear favourites over the young Ulverstone outfit. Burnie’s smothering defence will make it hard for the Red Hoppers to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Devonport will travel to Wynyard. The Wildcats must get a win over the Devonport women if they are going to be a chance of making the finals. Devonport’s drive-in player, Taylor Mole will play havoc with Wynyard’s defence as she would be the form player in the competition.

Although the Wynyard men have not won a game, they are more than capable of getting the points, in what should be a close game. Mitch Rowlands and Dalton Wilson are in good form for Wynyard, while Devonport will rely on the experience of Matt Zerna and young gun Nick Bingham.

Smithton will host Somerset. The Somerset women should easily account for the young Saints outfit.

If both men’s teams are at full strength, this game could go into overtime. Smithton’s Brad Hardy has put some solid games together lately, while the height and size of Hugh King will cause many headaches for Somerset’s defence. Somerset will rely heavily on Mitch Salter to get their offence rolling.

Latrobe are at home to Penguin. The Penguin women will have little trouble against the inexperienced Latrobe team. Latrobe’s drive-in player Brooke Brown has been a shiny light for her team.

The men’s game will be a beauty. Latrobe are now playing championship basketball, led well by new recruit Brady Armstrong. Penguin will rely heavily on scoring beyond the three point line and the leadership of Tyler Kelly.
