Top of the Table Clash

The race towards the finals is heating up and Sunday the 7th of July will see Steel Blue Oval host two top of the table clashes when Swan Districts take on the Coastal Titans in both the League and Reserves divisions.

The Reserves will bounce down at 12pm and League to follow at 2pm.

The games promise to be of the highest quality with both the Swans and Titans teams littered with state players, All-Australians and a staggering 7 players recently returning from the Women’s AFL match played at the MCG on Saturday the 29th of June.

It has been an interrupted few weeks for both clubs as many players made the trip to Cairns for the AFL Women's National Championships and most recently to Melbourne to play in the first even Women’s AFL Match representing Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs.

Swan Districts Reserves Coach, Mandy McSherry was impressed with the Swans players and their season this year.

“What we’ve found this year is with the amount of depth we’ve got. To have the senior and state players in the team and competing, it really lifts the other players”.

Coastal Titans Reserves Head Coach, Matt Lake was in a similar position in regards to the Coastal Titans.

“Their professionalism and their fitness really show they work hard, and their intensity sets the bench mark for the other players.”

The Coastal Titans and Swan Districts have had a strong rivalry for many seasons, which is reflected in their past results.

When the League teams last met in round 4 of the 2013 season, the Titans came out on top by just 11 points but McSherry thinks this game will be different.

“The last time we played we had a few players out and we really missed those guys in the team. We’ve got them back for this week and we’re looking forward to being really competitive against the Titans.”

When asked what the coaches were most looking forward to about the top of the table clash, both explained they were looking forward to a competitive game, with Titans Assistant Coach acknowledging the impressive season both teams have had.

“Both clubs have been the real standouts of the competition this year.Every time we play Swan Districts it’s always a good hard physical game.”

“We both know whoever wins the League match should finish top of the ladder. This weekend is really about playing our biggest opposition.”

With only a few rounds to go before the finals begin a win now for either team would be a huge mental advantage.

Also preparing for a tough game on Sunday, will be the two teams undefeated teams in the Youth Girls Competition; South Fremantle and Peel Thunderbirds will battle it out at Anning Park from 10:30am to decide the top spot.

Both teams have played impressive football over the last six rounds and will be desperate for a win coming into the second half of the season.

Currently in its first year, the Youth Girls competition is a vitally important step forward for female footy, providing a previously absent pathway between Auskick and the Senior WAWFL competition.

The Youth Girls gives us a glimpse into the future of Female Football in WA and promises to be a breeding ground for the talent of tomorrow.

This weekend will showcasesome of the talent WA has to offer so make sure you head down to Steel Blue Oval or Anning Park on Sunday the 7th of July.

27 WA Womens Football League players will join together next week to form Team WA, as they head to Cairns, Queensland for the 2013 AFL Women’s National Championships.

The WA State Open squad will travel from the 14th – 23rd June for the Championships under the guidance of Head Coach, Neil Mildenhall.

Donning the traditional gold and black jumpers, Team WA will aim to bring victory back to their home state, and take bragging rights away from rival state, Victoria.

WA, NSW, QLD and ACT will each play three games throughout week, with all Division One games of the Championships being played at Cazaly’s Stadium, Cairns.

Head Coach Neil Mildenhall was confident WA would compete well, and that the players were in good condition having been training since last October.

“We have worked really hard on our fitness and despite some major injuries to several of our seasoned players, we have a great mix of youth and experience” Mildenhall said.

Accompanying the squad to Cairns is Female High Performance Manager, Alison Moore, who viewed the group of players as a strong collection.

“With 12 girls selected in this year’s AFL Draft, the current Debbie Lee medallist, several previous All Australian players and some recent All Australian U18 players included in the team – WA will perform well.”

Major WA representation in first AFL National Women’s Draft

Last night 12 Western Australian women were selected in the inaugural AFL National Women’s Draft to represent the Melbourne Football Club and the Western Bulldogs Football Club.

This ground breaking match will be the first time AFL clubs have competed in an AFL sanctioned women’s match; with the game to be held on Saturday June 29 ahead of the club’s women’s round meeting.

Showcasing the immense talent in Western Australia 9 women were drafted to the Demons and 2 to the Bulldogs. The third draft pick was Swan Districts midfielder Chelsea Randall, who will don the Melbourne colours.

Randall expressed her great honour in being selected to represent Melbourne in the first AFL Women’s match.

“This is truly a dream come true. I’m delighted to play for Melbourne, which is one of the most historic teams in football.

“I play the game because I’m passionate about football. Being able to play and compete at this level is incredible, and I hope this game is the start of a national competition that young women players can aspire to be part of.

“I can’t wait to get out on the MCG, in a Demons guernsey and play some footy.’

The 2013 State U18 Youth Girls team has been named to represent WA at the National Championships in Shepparton, Victoria from May 4 to 11.

With a great mix of youth and experience, Head Coach Michelle Cowan is quietly confident the team will do well.

“The girls have displayed outstanding dedication and commitment to improving not only their skills and knowledge, but learning new tactics and strategies,” Cowan said.

“Since January, the girls have been building their fitness base under the expert guidance of South Fremantle strength and conditioning coach Ryan Gaias and the current signs are very good.”

2013 High Perfomance Academy players Sabrina Traub, Ashley Sharp and Kristen Jayasuria have all been selected in the side, together with Emma Swanson, who this year will have the honour of participating in both the U18 Youth Girls and the Open Women’s team in Cairns.
