Early Predictions

After another tense round of action, nothing changed at the top and bottom of the men's and women's Central ABL premiership tables.

2006 men's premiers Forestville and 2007 women's premiers West Adelaide maintained their unblemished records, while South Adelaide men and Central Districts women are still searching for their first victories.

A rejuvenated West Adelaide men's program has settled into the top half of the ladder with 16 point victory over 2008 preliminary finalist South Adelaide. Led by former Rocket Ryan Kersten who is averaging 24 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists, the Bearcats have so far avoided the injury woes of 2008 and have been buoyed by the return of Chris Molitor, himself averaging 18 points and seven rebounds.

Sturt Sabres followed up a close loss to North Adelaide with a comfortable victory over Central Districts, with 2006 Woollacott medallist Darren Ng leading the way with 24 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists per game. While the current Sabre unit is more than competitive, when it introduces 2004 Woollacott medallist Jacob Holmes and 2007 runner up Marcus Ng into its lineup, it will instantly elevate itself to "team-to-beat" status.

After a first round loss to fellow grand finalist Forestville, 2008 premier Norwood has handled the loss of David Cooper and injury to Todd Matthews well. Andrew Webber and Keith Krause are averaging over 20 points a game, but the Flames are also getting valuable contributions from youngsters Ben Howell, Tom Cioffi, Sam Grantham and Owen Giovine.

Southern Tigers women welcomed back Tamara Walker this year but the losses of Tracy Beatty and Leah Cannon will provide more opportunities for juniors this year. The Tigers have had comfortable wins over Centrals and Woodville, but will face a tougher test against 2008 premiers Sturt this weekend.

With Norwood head coach Simon Pritchard absent last week, 2007/8 coach Damian Weeks assisted regular assistant Brendan Kellaway in a victory over Eastern - Weeks happy to re-retire on his 1 and 0 record. The Flames will be strong this year with Rebecca Duke and Amanda Williams in the lineup, but the absence of Jess Foley made Saturday's win over Eastern tougher than the final score would indicate.

Despite an early loss to fellow 2008 grand finalist Sturt, the Rockets should again be title contenders this year. Jo Hill is providing 20 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists a game, all stats that were not available to the Rockets for the first half of the last few seasons. Perhaps more significantly, the Rockets look to be one of the deepest teams in the league this year, with the return of Rebecca Campbell and the addition of Sharna Breavington, complementing improving juniors Shannon McKay, Stana Zecevic and Rosalie Cutrie.
