Season Preview - Woodville Men

The gist: After a series of near misses, the Warriors have secured perhaps the biggest scalp of the offseason in former NBL star and CABL premiership winner Darren Ng. With many of their rivals losing their top talent, this could be the year the Warriors finally return to the postseason.

The stat: The Warriors have missed the finals every year since their upset Grand Final victory in 2005. They have finished sixth in five of the seven succeeding seasons, including the last two.

The star: Darren Ng averaged 18.1 ppg with Sturt last season, while sharing the role of the go-to guy with Tom Daly. As the main man, but still with a good supporting cast, expect Ng to put up even more points this season.

The x-factor: Former State junior Nathan Baggott returns to his junior club after a number of years off. His ability to transition back to basketball may have a big impact on the Warriors chances.

The glass half-full: the Warriors’ addition of Ng gives them a proven scorer who can make clutch baskets down the stretch. With Steve Pilkington, Adam Blight and Cameron Wilson, they have a good core of veteran players who have the experience to compete at this level.

The glass half-empty:The Warriors have lost their two leading scorers from last season in Zane Reeves and Puff Summers, while shooter Gary Birmingham has retired. Al Green’s system will take a bit of reshaping.

The verdict: The Warriors were on track for the postseason last year, but fell away down the stretch. Expect them to be around the mark again, though this time they should get the job done.
