Season Preview - Eastern Men

The gist:  The Eastern Mavericks have released a number of players, and replaced them with a number of others, but neither the "ins" nor "outs" are likely to have a significant impact on their season. Whether or not they can sign an NBL-calibre payer could have a huge bearing on their final seeding.

The stat: The Mavericks have not made the finals since 2006, when Ben Madgen, Brad Hill, Jacob Holmes and Joel Goodenough averaged 85.6 ppg between them.

The star: Shane Breheny was as solid as ever last season with averages of 12.3 points and 9.2 rebounds. His numbers do not fully reflect his value to the team.

The x-factor: Curtis Scipio was given little opportunity at Norwood and North the past two seasons. He has a good relationship with Coach Will Smith – will his numbers rise this season?

The glass half-full: Smith says starting from the bottom is a good thing due to little expectation and outside pressure. Young teams with a nothing-to-lose mentality are always dangerous to play against.

The glass half-empty:The Mavericks were easy-beats until Ed Millard’s intriguing mid-season signing. With him now gone, the Mavericks’ offence could struggle to produce points.

The verdict: Despite Coach Smith’s positive attitude, another tough year for the Mavericks awaits.

Predicted finish: Outside the five
