Eastern hold on for 10 point win over Southern

On Sunday afternoon the Southern Tigers men were keen to make it a double after downing the Woodville Warriors the previous night, and appeared capable of completing the feat and claiming an unexpected double.

At half-time the Tigers led 44-37 but margin could have been much greater except for a 3 point buzzer beater from Mavericks playing coach Brad Hill to end the quarter.

Following the break Reece Turner for Southern scored a three-pointer in the opening seconds of play, Eastern then trailed by 10 points for the second time in the contest, with scores 47-37.

The locals appeared to be staring down a second defeat at home in as many matches, however, the basket to Turner seemed to be the catalyst for Eastern to come alive.

During the following two and half minutes of play the locals hammered home 11 points with Tiger’s Coach Shaun Jennings forced to call a time-out to halt the scoring spree.

After the time-out Eastern continued on its winning way, hitting another eight points before Southern’sCodey Ellison halted the run with a three point basket.

Hill, Cameron Myles and Bruce all went on to score three pointers after Ellison’s basket.

Eastern totally dominated the quarter by scoring 37 points whilst holding the Tigers to just 14 points in the same period.

Six of the 14 Tiger points came in the closing minute with Scott O’Connor hitting twice from outside arc before the final break.

With Eastern a clear 74-58 leader at the start of the final term, Daniel Lean, Mark Hautop, Jack Madgen, Stuart Breheny and Lukass Blicavs opened the quarter for the home team.

Stuart Breheny hit the first basket, and from that point of the game with the result beyond doubt, both teams traded baskets for the remainder of the encounter.

Although Southern reduced the final margin to 10 points, they never recovered from the third quarter onslaught to seriously challenge for the match.

Eastern’s win achieved even despite the loss of Shane Breheny to injury just before halftime.

During 15 minutes of court time Breheny compiled nine points and seven rebounds but his loss covered by Rudi Dancis, who enjoyed extra court time and had a productive second half, finishing with ten points and six rebounds to more than compensate Breheny’s absence.
