Central ABL Pre-season Tournament

Basketball SA is pleased to announce the details of 2011 Central ABL Pre-season Tournament which will be held at the Wayville Sports Centre on March 19 and 20.

The men’s competition will feature 2010 Grand Finalists Sturt and West, 2008 and 2009 premiers Norwood, as well as Woodville, South Adelaide and Southern. Four of these teams are suiting new head coaches in 2011 – former 36ers Brad Davidson (Norwood) and Al Green (Woodville), former Forestville premiership player Shaun Jennings (Southern) and current Under 20 Men’s State coach Tony Casella – and the tournament will provide a great opportunity for them to get a feel for their new roles.

The women’s field includes 2009 and 2010 runners up and 2007 and 2008 premiers West Adelaide and Sturt, 2007 and 2008 runners up Norwood and North Adelaide, as well as Woodville and Southern. Four of these teams will also be lead by newly appointed coaches – former Lightning coaches Chris Lucas (Sturt) and Vicki Valk (West Adelaide), former Lightning player Tania Dhu (North Adelaide) and SASI network coach Karen Winter (Woodville).

Each team plays 3 minor round games and a final over the course of the weekend. Games involve 10 minute quarters played under FIBA timing conditions.

The minor rounds conclude on Sunday morning with men’s and women’s games between Sturt and West Adelaide, the men’s game a grand final rematch and the women’s clash featuring former Lightning coaches Chris Lucas and Vicki Valk.

As an added bonus, spectators will be treated to trial games between the SA Metro and SA Country State Under 18 Men’s and Women’s teams during the weekend. The teams have been preparing for an assault on the Australian Under 18 Championships in Tasmania in April and these trial games will be a rare opportunity to see the teams in a public setting prior to the nationals.

Entry is free and all spectators are welcome.
